RAINFOREST I (18:00) was the original version of Tudor’s “Rainforest” series of works. It was commissioned by Merce Cunningham Dance Company to accompany the dance work by the same title.
It was originally performed for the MCDC by David Tudor and Gordon Mumma using custom electronic oscillators and eight table top objects as resonant loudspeakers (amplified through an eight channel audio system).
The work has costumes by Jasper Johns, and set/decor using helium filled mylar pillows by Andy Warhol. The work was premiered at Buffalo State College in 1968.
Rainforest 1 will be performed as part of the exhibition along with other Merce Cunningham events co-ordinated by the Merce Cunningham Trust. Rainforest 1 has been reconstructed by the Stephen Petronio Company in 2015, and is currently touring as repertory with the Company.
