RAINFOREST V is a self-running sound environment conceived by the late David Tudor and realized by the group Composers Inside Electronics.  Each composer designs and constructs a set of sculptures which function as instrumental loudspeakers, and each independently produces sound material to display their sculpture’s resonant characteristics.  The appreciation of Rainforest V depends upon individual exploration, and the audience is invited to move freely among the sculptures.

A three-month long Rainforest V (self-running version) took place at Laboratorio Arte Alameda (Mexico City) in 2009.  This version was the first non-performance version, and had over 1,500 visitors just in the opening evening as part of the Radar Festival.  This installation served as a proving ground that a self-running version was not only practical, but retained the aesthetic of the original Rainforest IV work and was enthusiastically received.

A month-long Rainforest V installation (July 2011) was created for the historic Ft. Jay located at Governors Island, NY by CIE members John Driscoll, Phil Edelstein, and Matt Rogalsky.  This installation (available on weekends) had an attendance of over 5,200 visitors.

In 2015, Broadway 1602 took on representation of the work, with five unique variations being available for acquisition.  John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein created Rainforest V (variation 1) with additional sound files by Matt Rogalsky using twenty objects for exhibition at Broadway 1602 (NYC) from 1/30 - 3/2/15.  This variation has been acquired as part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (NYC).

A second Rainforest V (variation 2) of twenty objects was created in 2015 as part of an Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) exhibition at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg from 7/19 - 11/1/15.  This Rainforest V (variation 2) has been acquired as part of the collection of the Museum der Moderne.
